Past Continuous

The Past Continuous tense, also known as the Past Progressive tense, is used to describe actions or situations that were ongoing or in progress at a specific point in the past. It is used to provide context and describe background actions when narrating past events or stories.

Form:

To form the Past Continuous tense, you need two components:

  1. The past tense of the verb “to be” (was/were).
  2. The base form of the verb + “-ing” (present participle).

Here’s the basic structure:

  • Affirmative:
    • Subject + “was/were” + base verb + “-ing”
    • Example: “She was studying.”
  • Negative:
    • Subject + “wasn’t/weren’t” + base verb + “-ing”
    • Example: “I wasn’t working.”
  • Interrogative (Question):
    • “Was/Were” + subject + base verb + “-ing”
    • Example: “Were you listening?”

Meaning:

The Past Continuous tense is used to describe actions or events that were in progress at a specific moment in the past. It’s often used for:

  1. Describing background actions in a past story:
